Transitioning to Anchor Park: The Future of Recreational Hockey in Savannah

Recreational hockey in Savannah has been put on hold for both youth and adult leagues due to the inability of Zawyer Sports, the organization that operates the Civic Center, to reach an agreement with the city for rental. This pause comes as the Civic Center is set to be demolished in its final year. As a result, players like Ed Boring and his grandson now have to travel long distances for hockey, impacting their schedules and increasing travel time.

Plans are already in motion for a new ice facility in Port Wentworth, where the Ghost Pirates and the city are collaborating on a team training facility and amphitheater. The future of public skating in Savannah seems to be shifting towards the Port Wentworth facility, according to City Manager Joseph “Jay” Melder. However, neither Zawyer Sports nor the Ghost Pirates have provided a clear timeline for the return of recreational hockey leagues in Savannah.

Despite the uncertainty, players like Ed Boring are preparing for the changes by making travel plans and adjusting their routines to accommodate the shift in locations. The Ghost Pirates have announced that Anchor Park, including the hockey rink, is expected to be completed by early 2026 in the first quarter. The community is eagerly anticipating the new facility and the opportunities it will bring for recreational hockey in the area.
