Tragic Loss: Somali Women Among Victims in Channel Crossing Incident

Two Somali women tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the Channel to Britain, as confirmed by French authorities. The incident occurred when approximately 100 individuals boarded a makeshift boat near Neufchatel-Hardelot in an effort to reach the UK. The overloaded boat experienced engine failure and returned to shore an hour later, resulting in the rescue of 60 migrants. Civil protection workers provided care to those rescued, with some individuals fleeing upon the arrival of rescuers. A family suffering from moderate hypothermia was taken to a hospital in Boulogne. Additionally, the body of a man in his late 20s or early 30s was discovered in a canal in Gravelines, near Dunkirk.

These recent tragedies have brought the total number of Channel crossing deaths to at least 26 this year, based on official data. Since the beginning of the year, a record 32,000 migrants have arrived in Britain by crossing the Channel in small boats. A Franco-British initiative allows the UK to return migrants who are considered ineligible for asylum, including those who have traveled through a "safe country" to reach UK shores.
