From ASU to the NHL: Joey Daccord's Legacy and the Rise of Sun Devil Hockey

Tempe, Arizona may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of college hockey, but the Arizona State Sun Devils are making a name for themselves in the hockey world. Three former ASU players have made it to the NHL, including Josh Doan, son of Arizona hockey legend Shane Doan. The program reached a milestone this year when Cullen Potter was drafted 32nd overall by the Calgary Flames, marking the first time a Sun Devil was selected in the first round.
ASU alumni Joey Daccord, who currently plays in the NHL, will have his number 35 retired in the upcoming season opener on October 3rd. This event adds to the excitement of the Sun Devils' home opener, where they will face off against Penn State with Gavin McKenna leading the charge. Daccord holds the distinction of being the first ASU player to be drafted, signed, and play in the NHL, paving the way for future Sun Devils.
Daccord, originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2015, spent three seasons with ASU's hockey program from 2016 to 2019. His standout performance in his final season earned him a spot as a Hobey Baker Award finalist and led the Sun Devils to their first NCAA tournament appearance. After being selected by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft, Daccord has become a key player for the team, setting records in save percentage and goals against average.
With a new contract keeping him in Seattle until 2030, Daccord is poised to continue his success as the Kraken's top goaltender. His impact extends beyond the ice, as his foundation, the Joey Daccord Community Impact Fund, created "Dac's House" to provide memorable experiences for children undergoing medical treatment and their families at ASU home games. The foundation's contributions are managed in collaboration with the program's head coach and donors.
Daccord's journey from ASU to the NHL serves as a testament to the potential for success in college hockey, even in non-traditional markets like Arizona. His achievements highlight the growing reputation of the ASU hockey program and set the stage for future Sun Devils to follow in his footsteps. The legacy of ASU players making it to the NHL is sure to continue, with Daccord leading the way as a trailblazer for the program's success.
