Reading Rainbow Returns: Meet the New Host and Exciting Updates!

Reading Rainbow, the beloved children's TV program that promotes childhood reading and fights the "summer loss phenomena," is making a comeback after nearly 20 years. The show will return to PBS with a new host, Mychel Threets, also known as Mychal the Librarian on TikTok. Threets, a librarian and literacy advocate, currently serves as the resident librarian for PBS Kids. The show's revival was announced with a vibrant video on Instagram, teasing new episodes and celebrity guest stars like Rylee Arnold, Ezra Sosa, Bellen Woodard, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
The new edition of Reading Rainbow promises exciting projects like postcards and sidewalk libraries, along with a diverse lineup of books featuring famous narrators such as Jamie Chung, Gabrielle Union, Adam DeVine, Chrissy Teigen, and John Legend. Threets encouraged viewers to "follow the rainbow" in the video, hinting at the adventures to come on the show. Previously hosted by LeVar Burton, Reading Rainbow was a popular PBS program in classrooms, aiming to combat the decline in reading skills during the summer break. Burton, a lifelong advocate for literacy, emphasized the importance of promoting childhood reading and education.
Reading Rainbow originally launched in 1983 and aired for 26 years before concluding in November 2006. The show's return marks a new chapter in its mission to inspire children to discover the joys of reading and learning. With a fresh host, engaging projects, and celebrity guests, the revived Reading Rainbow is set to captivate young audiences and encourage a love of books and storytelling. Stay tuned for the colorful adventures ahead on PBS!
