NFL's Global Expansion: Flag Football Leagues, Olympic Inclusion, and International Growth

The NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, announced plans to establish professional men's and women's flag football leagues in the coming years during a press conference in London. The NFL aims to expand the popularity of the sport both in the United States and internationally, with flag football set to be featured in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Players selected for the Olympics will be allowed to skip summer practices with their clubs.
In addition to the Olympic initiative, the NFL is advocating for flag football to be recognized as a sponsored sport at the youth level across states. Currently, 16 out of 50 states have sanctioned girls' flag football as a varsity sport. Goodell also revealed plans for the NFL to return to Mexico for the 2026 regular season and to expand its presence in Asia, emphasizing the league's global ambitions beyond Europe and the Americas.
The NFL recently made its debut in Dublin, Ireland, and intends to continue playing games in Europe and Brazil. The league's upcoming schedule includes its first game in Spain on November 16th and a planned game in Australia in 2026. The NFL's strategic expansion efforts aim to engage fans worldwide and promote the growth of American football on a global scale.
