Reviving History: The Red Dust Revival at Lake Perkolilli

In the heart of outback Western Australia, a vibrant 1927 Austin 7 classic car emerged from the red dust-covered surroundings to participate in the revival of one of Australia's oldest race tracks. The event at Lake Perkolilli near Kalgoorlie-Boulder attracted nearly 200 vintage cars and motorcycles, including a 1934 Austin owned by Kalgoorlie's Casey Wood and her father Murray. Casey borrowed a classic car from family friend Geoff Paynter to experience the thrill of racing on the hard claypan surface.

The Red Dust Revival, held in 2019 and 2022, recreated races from over a century ago at Lake Perkolilli, where drivers once reached speeds of 200 kilometers per hour on the smooth surface. Participants like Casey Wood cherished the event as a way to create lasting memories, with her father's involvement dating back to the late 1990s when vintage car enthusiasts first visited the area. The event's family-oriented atmosphere was evident as participants shared their passion for vintage cars and motorcycles.

Fremantle mechanic Daryl Cook restored a 1939 AJS motorcycle for his wife to ride at Lake Perkolilli, paying tribute to his father's fond memories of the area. Meanwhile, Peter Harold from Bunbury meticulously built a replica of a 1925 Chrysler that raced at Le Mans in France, showcasing his dedication to preserving automotive history. Despite the challenges faced during the races, participants like Peter Harold remained committed to the spirit of the event and the thrill of racing on the historic track.

Event founder Graeme Cocks emphasized the significance of the Red Dust Revival in preserving motor racing history, highlighting the unique opportunity to witness pre-war cars and motorcycles racing on the original track from 1914. The dedication and craftsmanship displayed by participants in restoring vintage vehicles added to the event's charm, showcasing the passion and commitment of the vintage car community. The Red Dust Revival continues to celebrate the heritage of motor racing and the timeless appeal of classic cars and motorcycles.
