Islanders Practice at Eddie Westfall Bubble Rink: A Community Celebration of Hockey Legacy

The New York Islanders held their daily practice at the Eddie Westfall bubble rink in Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton. Eddie Westfall himself was present to watch the team practice at the rink, which is managed by the Peconic Hockey Foundation. The Peconic Wildcats players had the opportunity to witness the Islanders in action up close and even took the ice for photos with the NHL players. Riverhead Town Council Member Ken Rothwell praised the players for their cordial behavior, as they interacted with the kids and signed autographs. The kids enjoyed watching the players warm up by playing soccer in the parking lot before the full practice session began.

The practice session followed the team's regular daily routine, with injured players starting on the ice before the entire team joined for practice. Islanders co-owner John Ledecky collaborated with Peconic Hockey Foundation President Troy Albert to organize the practice session. Rothwell had the chance to chat with various Islanders players, including team captain Anders Lee and the newest addition to the roster, defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Schaefer expressed his disbelief at playing in the NHL at just 18 years old, sharing his excitement with Rothwell. The legacy of Eddie Westfall, the team's first captain and the namesake of the bubble rink, was highlighted during the event.

Rothwell, a lifelong Islanders fan and ice hockey player, emphasized the significance of the rink being named after Westfall. Westfall's dedication to the sport and the community was evident, as he cherished the opportunity to have a rink named in his honor. The rink's focus on providing a space for local kids to play hockey resonated with Westfall's values. Rothwell's passion for hockey and commitment to promoting the sport in eastern Suffolk led to his involvement in the construction of the bubble rink at Veterans Memorial Park. The support of donors like the Islanders Foundation and Edgar Goodale of Riverhead Building Supply was crucial in bringing the rink to fruition.

The Islanders are gearing up for the 2025-2026 season, with their opening game scheduled in Pittsburgh and their home opener at UBS Arena in Elmont. The practice session at the Eddie Westfall bubble rink served as a memorable experience for both the players and the local community, showcasing the team's dedication to the sport and its fans. The event highlighted the importance of fostering a love for hockey among young players and honoring the legacy of influential figures like Eddie Westfall.
