NCAA Considers Allowing Student-Athletes and Staff to Bet on Professional Sports: Potential Rule Change and Integrity Concerns

The NCAA Division I Administrative Committee recently approved a proposal allowing student-athletes and athletic department staff to bet on professional sports, a departure from the previous policy due to challenges in enforcement with the rise of legal sports betting in the U.S. Divisions II and III will review the proposal in their upcoming meetings, with a potential effective date of November 1. Betting on college sports will continue to be prohibited.

The decision to consider this change comes in light of an increasing number of alleged betting violations involving student-athletes. The NCAA disclosed a case where a Fresno State men's basketball player manipulated his performance for gambling purposes and collaborated with two teammates in a prop betting scheme. The NCAA is also investigating 13 student-athletes from six schools for potential gambling violations related to integrity concerns.

While the NCAA enforcement staff is actively addressing sports betting cases, the proposed rule change is not an endorsement of sports betting. NCAA officials underscored their ongoing apprehension about the risks associated with all forms of sports gambling. The Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee supported the rule change, emphasizing the importance of fair competition and integrity in college sports.
