Revolutionizing Powerboat Racing: IHRA's New Era Under Darryl Cuttell's Ownership

Powerboat racing has reached new heights with the recent acquisition of the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) by Darryl Cuttell, the owner of Darana Hybrid. Cuttell's passion for racing led him to purchase IHRA, and his green Mystic catamaran, formerly known as Spirit of Qatar, made waves at the Shootout boat races in August by hitting speeds of up to 242 mph on a 3/4-mile course. The IHRA, known for its land-based racing events, is now focusing more on powerboat racing since Cuttell's ownership.
In a recent press release, IHRA announced plans to increase the excitement in powerboat racing with a $250,000 purse at the Key West Championship in November and a minimum $1 million purse for the 2026 IHRA Offshore National Championship. The organization is also providing more support for racers and planning competitions at top destinations across North America. Cuttell has been expanding IHRA's presence in on-land racing by acquiring race organizations and courses in 2025, including Kil-Kare Raceway, Milan Dragway (now Darana Dragway), and Piedmont Dragway in the U.S., as well as IHRA Australia.
Darryl Cuttell, IHRA's Owner and CEO, expressed his excitement for the future of the organization, stating that they are not just racing but reviving a movement rooted in faith, family, and freedom. Ray Lee, Publisher of Speedboat Magazine, praised IHRA's leadership for creating a platform that offers the highest level of competition and entertainment for racers and fans both on the water and on screen. The future of powerboat racing looks promising with IHRA's renewed focus and commitment to the sport.
