Animal Welfare Investigation at The Q Racing Facility: Findings and Recommendations Awaited

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the animal welfare standards at The Q, a racing facility, including track conditions and feedback from trainers and stakeholders. The findings and recommendations of the investigation are yet to be made public.

The Racing Minister's office stated that the investigation was thorough and aimed to ensure that The Q upholds animal welfare standards. The identity of the entity conducting the review remains confidential until the report is released.

The investigation focused on all three tracks at The Q, which were designed with modern cambers and surface banking to enhance racing safety and reduce injuries to greyhounds. Concerns over animal welfare have increased scrutiny on the greyhound racing industry and government oversight.

The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds expressed concerns over the number of greyhound deaths at The Q, with the most recent being Bad Boy Red. The president emphasized the challenges of making a greyhound track completely safe, regardless of the review's findings.

The Labor opposition urged the immediate release of the investigation report to address the issues raised at The Q and provide clarity to the industry and community. A separate RTI application hinted at significant animal welfare concerns at the facility, with a substantial fee imposed to access related documents.

In August, Tasmania announced plans to phase out greyhound racing by 2029, following a similar ban attempt in NSW that was later reversed. Queensland's LNP government has shown support for greyhound racing, considering it an integral part of the state's identity.

The release of the government's comprehensive review into all three racing codes, including thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing, has been delayed. The report is expected to provide insights into the industry's operations and welfare standards.
