Empowering St. Louis Youth Through Soccer: The CITY Futures Program and Mini-Pitch Initiative
St. Louis native Tim Ream will represent the U.S. Men’s National Team at the upcoming World Cup, carrying the hopes of his soccer-loving hometown. The CITY Futures program aims to introduce soccer to young players in underserved areas of St. Louis, offering free demonstrations, classes, and coaching clinics. The program has evolved to include physical education classes in local elementary schools and the installation of mini pitches for year-round play.
In partnership with local MLS, NWSL, and USL clubs, U.S. Soccer launched the mini-pitch initiative to install over 1,000 mini-pitches nationwide by the 2026 World Cup. St. Louis CITY SC has committed to building 11 mini-pitches across the metro area by next summer, focusing on underserved communities. The program aims to provide all kids in the region with the opportunity to try soccer and learn valuable social and emotional skills through the sport.
CITY Futures has partnered with local schools to organize activations around the mini-pitches, engaging kids in P.E. classes and teaching important life lessons such as conflict management, self-confidence, and goal setting. The program recently hosted the STL Street Soccer Cup at DeSoto Park, where winners from qualifying tournaments competed in a festive atmosphere. The event showcased the progress of the program and its goal of keeping kids from diverse backgrounds involved in soccer.
The mini-pitches have become popular community hubs, with kids using them regularly for play and practice. The ultimate aim of the program is to build a sense of community and provide accessible opportunities for kids to engage with the sport. CITY SC is dedicated to creating a positive impact on the lives of young players in St. Louis through the CITY Futures program.
