The former shelter director, Fetherston, who previously ran a migrant shelter in Marlborough, Massachusetts, from 2023 to 2024, criticized the government for failing to protect children in the shelter system. He highlighted the case of another Haitian illegal alien, Ronald Joseph, who raped and impregnated his 14-year-old daughter at the Marlborough shelter. Despite the seriousness of the crime, Joseph was only transferred to another state-run shelter and was not arrested until months later. Fetherston emphasized that these cases are part of a larger pattern of child sexual abuse that has gone unpunished.
Fetherston pointed out that the shelter residents were not properly vetted through criminal background checks, despite claims by the governor's office. He criticized the governor for opening the doors to the shelters without proper vetting, leading to the abuse of children. He also highlighted the fact that taxpayer dollars fund these shelters, which are supposed to provide a safe environment for residents.
In response to the incidents, Governor Maura Healey ordered the closure of the state's shelter system and provided some residents with housing assistance. However, Fetherston noted that there have been negative consequences in the community, such as an increase in auto accidents and overwhelmed school districts due to the influx of foreign students. Alvarez arrived in the U.S. under the parole process for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (CHNV) initiated by the Biden administration. This policy allowed a limited number of individuals to enter the U.S. if they had not entered illegally, had a sponsor in the U.S., and passed certain checks. Despite reaching out for comment, Healey's office did not respond immediately to inquiries.
