From Snow to Asphalt: The Inspiring Journey of Robert Dykstra, Asphalt Racing Enthusiast
Robert Dykstra, a snowmobile enthusiast from Grand Rapids, Michigan, has a unique passion for asphalt racing on his snowmobile during warm weather. Due to a past snowmobile accident that left him with serious injuries, including damage to his spinal cord, Dykstra now prefers to ride his snowmobile on solid ground rather than snow-covered terrain.
The accident, which occurred in 2012 in Hopkins, resulted in Dykstra breaking multiple ribs, collapsing his lungs, and damaging his spinal cord. After a lengthy recovery process that included weeks of inpatient and outpatient therapy at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, Dykstra was able to regain his mobility and pursue his passion for racing.
Despite the challenges he faced during his recovery, Dykstra is now back on his sled, participating in asphalt racing events with modified snowmobiles equipped with wheels instead of traditional snow skis. His dedication to the sport has even garnered support from his family, who initially had reservations but now fully support his racing endeavors.
Looking ahead to the 2025 World Drag Racing Alliance Championship in Montgomery, Alabama, Dykstra is determined to compete for a world championship title. With speeds reaching up to 115 miles per hour on a quarter-mile track, Dykstra finds joy and fulfillment in the adrenaline rush of racing and the thrill of pushing himself to new limits.
