Premier League Contemplates Eliminating Boxing Day Fixtures Due to Scheduling Challenges

The Premier League is currently contemplating the possibility of eliminating Boxing Day fixtures from the domestic football calendar. This decision is being considered due to scheduling challenges arising from the expanded UEFA competitions and the FA Cup, which have dedicated weekend slots for their fixtures. As a result, the Premier League has faced difficulties in accommodating its games within the limited available weekends.
The FA Cup fourth, fifth, and sixth round matches have been allocated specific weekend slots, leaving the Premier League with fewer opportunities to schedule its fixtures. Currently, only TV picks for games up to Christmas have been announced, with league sources suggesting that dividing the announcement for TV selections could benefit supporters in making travel and accommodation arrangements.
The Premier League and broadcasters have a minimum of six weeks to announce any changes to the fixture schedule, with potential adjustments still possible if affected by European games. However, fans have expressed concerns about the short notice of changes, leading to financial implications due to altered dates and times. Discussions are ongoing regarding the feasibility of traditional Boxing Day matches, with one game during the festive period delaying the next round of TV selection announcements.
Given the limited availability of weekends in December, including December 27th, it remains uncertain how many games, if any, will be rescheduled. Currently, no fixtures are scheduled for Boxing Day, with all 20 Premier League teams set to compete on Saturday, December 27th, although this arrangement may be subject to change. The Premier League has confirmed TV selections leading up to Christmas, with matches broadcast on Sky Sports and TNT Sports.
The month of December kicks off with midweek Premier League action on December 2nd and 3rd, followed by subsequent midweek fixtures available for viewing on Sky Sports. The games have varying kick-off times, with some starting at 7.30pm and others at 8.15pm. Notable matches, such as the Tyne-Wear derby, have been rescheduled, while Fulham vs Nottingham Forest marks the final Premier League clash before Christmas Day.
Upcoming fixtures include:
- West Ham vs Fulham
- Crystal Palace vs Tottenham
- Man United vs Newcastle United
- Nottingham Forest vs Man City
- Sunderland vs Leeds United
- Brentford vs Bournemouth
- Chelsea vs Aston Villa
- Liverpool vs Wolves
- Arsenal vs Brighton
- Burnley vs Everton
