Empowering Girls: A Look at the Try Hockey For Free Event in Pelham

Girls and women of all ages recently had the chance to try out hockey for free at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. The event, led by the University of Alabama Women’s Hockey Team, aimed to introduce newcomers to the sport in a supportive and fun environment. Participants of all experience levels were welcome, with skates and gear provided for the session.

Pelham Civic Complex Director of Hockey, Josh Harris, shared that the idea for the event stemmed from the Crimson Tide women’s program and their "Grow the Game" initiative. The event provided a positive setting for first-time players to learn the basics of hockey and interact with local female athletes who are already involved in the sport.

The Try Hockey For Free session, which followed a game between Alabama and Georgia, featured players and coaches from both teams guiding participants through various drills and skating stages suitable for all skill levels. Harris expressed optimism about the event's impact and hopes it will generate more interest in local youth and adult hockey leagues.

While the girls' Try Hockey For Free event is still in its early stages, Harris is hopeful that it will lead to increased participation among female players in the future. He emphasized the importance of offering opportunities like this to encourage more girls to get involved in the sport and potentially form a dedicated girls' division.

Although there hasn't been a significant increase in female registrations yet, Harris remains optimistic about the potential for growth in female participation in hockey programs in Pelham. He encouraged girls interested in exploring hockey opportunities to reach out for more information about upcoming programs and events.
