OpenAI Enhances Safeguards for Actors' Rights on Sora 2 Platform

OpenAI has addressed concerns surrounding its Sora 2 platform by implementing new safeguards to protect actors' voices and likenesses. Actor Bryan Cranston, along with industry stakeholders such as SAG-AFTRA, CAA, and UTA, expressed worries when the initial launch of the AI video platform allowed users to create unauthorized images of actors. However, OpenAI has since updated Sora 2 with additional protections, earning praise from Cranston and others for respecting performers' rights.
Following the initial rollout of Sora 2, which enabled users to generate AI video clips featuring copyrighted characters, CAA and UTA were quick to raise alarms about potential misuse. OpenAI has since collaborated with industry partners to address the situation and enhance safeguards for actors' rights. SAG-AFTRA and the agencies have acknowledged the company's efforts to protect performers from unauthorized use of their voice and likeness.
Sean Astin, the new president of SAG-AFTRA, emphasized the risk of "massive misappropriation" faced by actors due to AI technology. He commended Bryan Cranston for taking action by engaging with his union and representatives to address the issue. OpenAI's commitment to implementing an opt-in protocol, allowing artists to choose whether to participate in the use of their voice and likeness through AI, has been welcomed by industry stakeholders.
OpenAI has previously supported the No Fakes Act, a proposed federal law aimed at prohibiting non-consensual digital replicas. SAG-AFTRA has prioritized the passage of this legislation to provide actors with additional protections at the federal level. CEO Sam Altman reiterated the company's dedication to safeguarding performers from the unauthorized use of their voice and likeness, emphasizing the importance of respecting artists' rights.
Sora 2 now offers performers the option to "opt in" to the platform for the use of their likenesses. OpenAI has made adjustments to give copyright holders and performers greater control over how their images are utilized, addressing concerns about the platform's functionality as an "opt-out" system. The company's commitment to protecting performers and ensuring their consent in the use of AI technology reflects its ongoing efforts to uphold industry standards and respect artists' rights.
