Prepare for the Next Round: The Mitchells vs. the Machines Sequel Announced with New Directors and Production Details

Get ready for a rematch as Sony Pictures Animation announces a sequel to the 2021 Oscar-nominated film "The Mitchells vs. the Machines." Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans are set to direct the sequel, with Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin writing the screenplay. Production is scheduled to start in early 2026. Just like the original, Netflix will distribute the sequel as part of a licensing agreement with Sony.
"The Mitchells vs. the Machines" follows the Mitchell family on a road trip to take their daughter, Katie, to film school. However, their journey takes a chaotic turn when a rogue AI named PAL leads a robot rebellion against humanity. The film received critical acclaim for its unique animation style and won multiple awards, including eight Annie Awards.
The sequel will see a more collaborative partnership between Sony and Netflix, following the success of their previous collaborations. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are producing the film through their company Lord Miller, with Kurt Albrecht producing for Sony Pictures Animation. Guillermo Martinez, who previously worked on "Missing Link" and the first "Mitchells vs. Machines" film, will be making his directorial debut.
JP Sans, known for his work on DreamWorks Animation films, including "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" and "Trolls World Tour," will co-direct the sequel. The film is highly anticipated by fans of the original and promises to deliver another exciting adventure for the Mitchell family. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming "Mitchells" sequel!
