Transatlantic Cinematic Collaboration: Tribeca Festival Lisboa 2025 Showcases Indie Films from Both Sides of the Atlantic

The Tribeca Film Festival, born out of a desire to bring New York City together after the 9/11 attacks, is extending its reach to Tribeca Festival Lisboa’s second edition, showcasing select indie films from its 2025 festival. The festival aims to foster collaboration between American and Portuguese artists and filmmakers, using cinema as a tool to bridge the gap between indie film industries on both sides of the Atlantic.
This year's lineup at Tribeca Festival Lisboa includes films that explore American filmmakers' take on European stories and vice versa. The festival will feature works like Julian Schnabel’s "In the Hand of Dante," based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, and James Vanderbilt’s "Nuremberg," a film shot in Hungary about post-war Germany. The event will also showcase European directors who have delved into American themes, such as Yorgo Lanthimos’ "Bugonia," and a U.S.-Portugal co-production titled "Honeyjoon" by director Lilian T. Mehrel.
Tribeca Festival Lisboa will continue its tradition of bringing selections from the Tribeca Festival to European audiences. Films like Libby Ewing’s "Charliebird," Alberto Arvelo’s "All We Cannot See," Michael J. Weithorn’s "The Best You Can," and Steven Feinartz’s documentary "Are We Good?" will be among the featured works. The festival aims to elevate the profile of European talent like Marc Maron and provide a platform for their work to reach a wider audience.
In a spirit of cultural exchange, the festival will also highlight local Portuguese cinema, showcasing films like Duarte Neves’ "Match," Antonio Ferreira’s "A Memoria do Cheiro das Coisas," and Fernando Vendrell’s "Além do Horizonte – A Travessia." Panels and discussions will bring together American and Portuguese filmmakers to engage in dialogue and collaboration, fostering a deeper connection between the artistic communities on both sides of the Atlantic.
Tribeca Festival Lisboa will feature a diverse lineup of speakers and participants, including American and Portuguese artists like Kim Cattrall, Meg Ryan, Piper Perabo, Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Claudia Vieira, and Augusto Fraga. Through storytelling and cultural exchange, the festival aims to transcend boundaries and bring people together, showcasing the power of art to foster understanding and dialogue across cultures and generations.
