Hughes Brothers' Pucks & Pages: Promoting Literacy Through Hockey and Reading

Jack and Quinn Hughes embarked on a friendly competition to see who could read more books during a hockey season. Jack, who read 50 books, rediscovered his love for reading, which has been a cherished pastime since his youth. Reading serves as a peaceful escape for Jack, allowing him to disconnect from the game and immerse himself in creativity and enjoyment. Inspired by their shared passion for reading, Jack and his brother Luke have launched the Hughes Brothers’ Pucks & Pages initiative in collaboration with JAG Physical Therapy and Hockey in New Jersey. This multi-year reading program aims to promote literacy among New Jersey’s youth, combining the brothers' love for reading with their involvement in the community and the New Jersey Devils.

The Hughes Brothers’ Pucks & Pages initiative, presented by JAG Physical Therapy, will provide selected books chosen by Jack and Luke to participants of Hockey in New Jersey's scholastic program. Upon completing a book, each reader will receive a signed certificate from the Hughes brothers, recognizing their achievement. Additionally, chosen children and their families will have the opportunity to attend a Devils’ home game as guests of Jack and Luke. Following the game, they will meet the Hughes brothers to discuss the book, share their thoughts on hockey, and engage in meaningful conversations.

Jack and Luke are excited about the prospect of connecting with the children and families through this initiative, fostering a love for reading and sports. Jack, who admires authors like Larry McMurtry and James Patterson, hopes that the selected books will spark a similar passion for reading in the young participants. The first book chosen for the program is Fast Pitch by Nic Stone, a compelling coming-of-age tale centered around a softball player striving to prove herself both on and off the field. Jack and Luke are enthusiastic about the opportunity to combine their love for hockey and reading to create a positive and engaging experience for the community.

The Hughes Brothers’ Pucks & Pages initiative is a testament to the brothers' commitment to promoting literacy and fostering a love for reading among New Jersey’s youth. Through their partnership with JAG Physical Therapy and Hockey in New Jersey, Jack and Luke aim to inspire young readers to explore the world of books and discover the joy of storytelling. By sharing their passion for reading and sports, the Hughes brothers hope to create a lasting impact on the community and encourage a new generation of readers.
