Scandal in the NBA: Billups and Rozier Arrested in Illegal Gambling Operations

The recent arrests of Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier in connection with illegal sports gambling and underground poker operations have shocked the sports world. The FBI's ongoing investigations, known as "Operation Nothing But Bet" and "Operation Royal Flush," have uncovered long-running schemes of fraud and manipulation within the gambling ecosystem.

According to federal authorities, Rozier, Jones, and others allegedly used non-public NBA information to place fraudulent wagers between December 2022 and March 2024. They are accused of laundering profits through shell companies and offshore accounts. In a separate indictment, Billups and Jones were implicated in a network of rigged, high-stakes poker games operating in various locations since at least 2019.

Former University of Kentucky football player De’Niro Laster was also named in the sports-betting indictment, allegedly acting as an intermediary between Rozier and bettors wagering on Rozier’s individual performance prop bets. Laster, who played linebacker for the Wildcats in 2016, is said to have relayed information to the bettors.

Billups, Rozier, and Jones made initial court appearances, with Rozier released on a $6 million bond and Billups required to surrender his passport. Federal officials emphasized that the investigations are ongoing and that all individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The shocking revelations have sent shockwaves through the sports community, and the fallout from these arrests is likely to have far-reaching implications.
