Adapt2Win: Athletes Unite to Tackle Climate Change Ahead of COP30 Conference

A global campaign has been launched to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on sports ahead of the COP30 conference next month. Athletes from around the world, including Brazilian soccer player Tamires Dias and NBA player DeAndre Jordan, have signed an open letter calling for action. The COP30 conference will take place in Brazil from November 10 to 21.

Tamires Dias, a Brazilian soccer player who has participated in two Women's World Cups, emphasized the challenges athletes face due to climate change. She is part of a group of elite athletes supporting the Adapt2Win campaign, which aims to urge governments to prioritize and invest in climate adaptation. The campaign, backed by the Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust, stresses the importance of adapting to climate change.

The Adapt2Win campaign features a hard-hitting film showcasing the impact of floods and fires on sports venues, which will be shown at the COP30 conference in Belem. The film highlights the economic losses caused by climate-related disasters and the lack of global climate finance directed towards adaptation efforts. Athletes like Raheem Sterling, Bongi Mbonambi, and Kenneth Omeruo have joined the campaign to advocate for climate action.

Raheem Sterling, who has played for England and witnessed the effects of climate change in the Caribbean, emphasized the need for community-led solutions to address climate challenges. The campaign also showcases grassroots initiatives in countries like Kenya and Sierra Leone that are already working on climate resilience. COP30 chief executive Ana Toni stressed the importance of collective action across sectors to drive meaningful change.

The Adapt2Win campaign serves as a reminder that everyone, including governments, businesses, and sports organizations, has a role to play in addressing climate change. Athletes from various sports backgrounds have come together to raise awareness about the urgent need for climate adaptation measures. As the world faces the impacts of climate change, the campaign aims to inspire action and promote sustainable solutions to protect sports and communities worldwide.
