Florida's Super Speeder Law: Gulf Breeze Police Department Makes Significant Arrest

The Gulf Breeze Police Department recently made a significant arrest under Florida's new "Super Speeder" law. Body camera footage captured two 19-year-old individuals, Hayden Wallace and Noah Young, engaging in a high-speed race on Highway 98, where they were clocked at 100 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone. Chief Rick Hawthorne highlighted that while racing is not uncommon in Gulf Breeze, it typically occurs on the bridge. The drivers were apprehended at the entrance to the Naval Live Oaks area and charged with racing and exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 mph.

Florida's new Super Speeder law imposes stricter penalties for such offenses. If convicted, Wallace and Young could face 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both. Chief Hawthorne expressed satisfaction with the law's severity, emphasizing the importance of deterring reckless driving behavior to prevent potential harm to others. Repeat offenders may incur a $1,000 fine, up to 90 days in jail, or both, with the possibility of a one-year license suspension for two violations within five years. Additionally, these charges result in increased point penalties on the driver's license.
