Bill Berry: Life After R.E.M. - A Quiet Retreat to the Farm

In March 1995, during a performance in Lausanne, Switzerland, R.E.M.'s drummer Bill Berry collapsed on stage due to a ruptured brain aneurysm. Despite the scare, Berry recovered fully but later decided to leave the band after 17 years. His departure was amicable, with Berry citing a shift in priorities as the reason for his decision.
Following his exit from R.E.M., Berry focused on his hay farm in Farmington, Georgia, opting for a quieter life away from the music industry. While the brain aneurysm wasn't the sole reason for his departure, it did play a role in his decision, affecting his energy levels and drive for music.
Despite some regrets, Berry has found contentment in his post-R.E.M. life, enjoying the peace and stillness of his home in Georgia. He continues to play music casually, with a piano, guitars, and drums in his home, occasionally writing new songs and staying connected to music in a more relaxed manner.
In 2007, R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, leading to a reunion performance with all original members, including Berry. While he officially retired from professional music in 1997, Berry remains active in music, splitting his time between the farm, golf, recording, production work, and occasional live performances with friends.
