Man Disqualified from Driving for Illegal Sulky Race on Limerick Road

A man was recently disqualified from driving for two years after being caught driving alongside an illegal sulky race on a busy road in Limerick. Garda Dermot Hallett witnessed the incident on the N20, Croom bypass, where Robert Joseph McNamara and Johnathon Lyons were observed participating in the race. The race involved multiple vehicles and obstructed other motorists from using the road. Despite McNamara and Lyons claiming they stumbled upon the race and were not involved in organizing it, they were still held accountable for their actions. McNamara, a father of five, had one previous conviction for driving without tax, while Lyons had 47 previous convictions for various offenses. Judge Patricia Harney expressed concern over Lyons' reckless behavior, especially considering he is a father of two young children. However, she acknowledged that he has shown improvement since the incident. As a result, McNamara was disqualified from driving for two years, with the ban set to begin on April 19, 2026, and was fined €500. Lyons was fined €300 for his involvement in the illegal race.
