Turkish Referees Face Disciplinary Action for Gambling Scandal: Upholding Integrity in Football
Disciplinary action is being taken against 152 referees in Turkey who were found to be actively gambling, sparking concerns about the integrity of officiating in the country. The issue came to light following complaints from former Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho about the quality of refereeing during his time in charge. An investigation spanning five years revealed that out of the 571 officials in Turkey, 371 had betting accounts, with 152 actively placing bets on matches. Some referees had only made a single bet, while others had wagered on over 1,000 games, with one referee betting a staggering 18,227 times. Seven officials from Turkey's top two divisions were implicated in the investigation, along with 15 assistant referees.
Mourinho's frustrations with the system in Turkey have been validated by the findings of the investigation, which have raised concerns about the credibility of refereeing in the country. While there is no evidence to suggest that any matches involving Mourinho's Fenerbahce were influenced by referee bets, the revelations have cast a shadow over the integrity of Turkish football. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the referees involved, with potential bans of up to a year under their rules. FIFA regulations could also see the referees facing three-year bans and hefty fines of nearly £95,000.

Fenerbahce president Sadettin Saran expressed shock and sadness at the revelations but viewed the exposure of the issue as a positive step towards addressing the problem.
