Trump Announces Breakthrough Agreement with China on Rare Earths and Critical Minerals

President Donald Trump announced that he has reached a one-year agreement with China regarding rare earths and critical minerals, while also reducing fentanyl tariffs on Beijing by half. This agreement was made during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. Trump described the meeting as "amazing" and mentioned that several decisions were made during their discussions. The rare earth issue has been resolved with a one-year agreement that will be renegotiated annually, and tariffs on Chinese exports will be reduced from 57% to 47%.

Following the successful meeting, Trump revealed plans to visit China in April, with Xi reciprocating the visit to the U.S. at a later date. This meeting marked the first time the two leaders had met in six years, with the discussions lasting one hour and 40 minutes. Prior to the meeting, both leaders expressed a positive outlook, with Trump referring to Xi as an "old friend" and emphasizing their strong relationship. Xi reassured that China's economic growth goals would not conflict with Trump's vision of "Make America Great Again."

The ongoing tensions between the United States and China have been a focal point this year, with recent escalations including Beijing's export controls and Washington's threats to restrict software-powered exports to China. The U.S. had outlined various deals they hoped to achieve with China, including measures to limit the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. and the potential divestiture of TikTok from its parent company ByteDance. Discussions also covered topics such as tariffs, technology restrictions, and rare earths.

While Beijing had been cautious about the possibility of reaching an agreement, there were signs of progress as China purchased its first shipments of U.S. soybeans in several months. This development hinted at a potential improvement in the relationship between the two economic superpowers. The meeting between Trump and Xi in South Korea marked a significant step towards addressing key issues and fostering a more cooperative relationship between the United States and China.
