Chauncey Billups Faces Federal Charges: The Portland Trail Blazers Coach's Legal Battle

The head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Chauncey Billups, is scheduled to make an initial court appearance in federal court in New York next week. He is facing federal charges related to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in connection with allegedly fixed illegal poker games involving the mafia. Billups has hired defense attorney Mark Mukasey, known for handling high-profile white-collar cases, to represent him in court. The coach, who is currently on leave from the Blazers, is expected to plead not guilty at his arraignment on November 6.
Prosecutors claim that Billups was used as a prominent figure to attract players to rigged high-stakes poker games with the aim of defrauding them. Prior to coaching the Blazers, Billups was allegedly involved in an illegal poker game in Las Vegas in 2019 that reportedly took at least $50,000 from victims. His initial defense attorney, Chris Heywood, released a statement asserting Billups' innocence and emphasizing that he would not jeopardize his reputation or freedom for anything, including a card game. Heywood also stated that Billups has never engaged in gambling on basketball games or provided insider information.
While Billups is not implicated in a separate federal case involving sports gambling and the NBA, prosecutors have mentioned an unnamed co-conspirator who allegedly shared information about player injuries and plans to manipulate games for financial gain. This co-conspirator, with a background similar to Billups' in playing and coaching, reportedly communicated with defendant Eric Earnest about strategies to influence game outcomes. The Athletic reported connections between Billups and Earnest, including mutual family members following each other on Instagram.
During his leave from the NBA, Billups is not receiving his salary. A status conference involving Billups and other defendants linked to the rigged poker games, referred to as "Operation Royal Flush" by prosecutors, is scheduled for November 24. The outcome of Billups' court appearance and the ongoing legal proceedings will determine the impact on his coaching career and reputation in the basketball community.
