The Departure of Slash: A Turning Point in Guns N' Roses History

On this day in 1996, Axl Rose made a public announcement that lead guitarist Slash had departed from Guns N’ Roses. The announcement, sent via fax, also revealed that there would be no new music, merchandise, website, or fan club from the band. This news came after a series of lineup changes in the early 1990s, leaving Rose, Slash, and bassist Duff McKagan as the only original members.

The departure of Slash was confirmed by Rose in the fax to MTV, stating that Slash had not been musically involved with the band since April 1994 and was officially outside of the Guns N’ Roses Partnership since December 31, 1995. The fax also mentioned that there would be no tour, music videos, or new recordings, despite promises of a 12-song minimum recording with original B-sides.

Slash later explained his departure from Guns N’ Roses as a difference of opinion in musical direction with Axl Rose. He mentioned that he felt uncomfortable with the new contract presented by Rose’s legal team, which led him to decide not to continue with the band. Despite the departure not being amicable, Slash emphasized that it was inevitable.

In the years following Slash’s exit, Guns N’ Roses continued with Axl Rose at the helm, while Slash pursued his solo projects. The split between the two iconic band members marked a significant moment in the history of Guns N’ Roses and the rock music scene.
