Berklee College of Music Honors Bob Dylan with Doctor of Music Degree

Bob Dylan has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree by Berklee College of Music, making it the first time he has received such recognition from an American educational institution since 1970. Dylan expressed his gratitude for the honor and reflected on the impact that learning from great musicians at Berklee could have had on his career. The school acknowledged Dylan's significant influence on modern music and his dedication to creative exploration, highlighting the importance of honoring his contributions.

Berklee College of Music President Jim Lucchese emphasized the institution's admiration for Dylan's evolving artistry and pursuit of truth through music and language. The school's American Roots Music Program artistic director, Matt Glaser, praised Dylan's lifelong commitment to learning and transforming various American song traditions, aligning with Berklee's curriculum rooted in the music of the African diaspora. Glaser also highlighted Dylan's role as a teacher and learner, inspiring others to embrace music and the arts as a continuous learning experience.

Despite dropping out of the University of Minnesota in 1959, Dylan has now received honorary degrees from prestigious institutions like Scotland's University of St. Andrews and Princeton. The ceremony at Berklee College of Music will not feature Dylan in person, but the school is organizing a concert titled Watching the River Flow: A Roots Salute to Bob Dylan. The event will showcase students, faculty, alumni, and visiting artists performing Dylan's iconic songs, culminating in a unique rendition of "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" with students taking turns singing each of the 20 verses.
