Operation Hercules Team Receives National Award for Curbing Illegal Street Racing in the West Midlands

Illegal street racing drivers in the West Midlands are facing increased legal action, with more individuals being taken to court. West Midlands Police received a national award for their efforts in curbing car cruising activities. The Operation Hercules Team was recognized for their innovation and excellence at the NPCC Roads Policing Conference in Manchester. Street racers are aware that they will face strict police measures if they participate in events prohibited by a High Court injunction. The number of convictions for dangerous driving offenses has risen, with 58 individuals convicted and 42 cases currently in court. Additionally, over 20 cases, including three for perverting the course of justice, are under investigation by the police.
Around 240 drivers have been directed to attend diversionary courses as part of the enforcement efforts. Collaboration between the police, West Midlands Fire Service, local authorities, and probation services has been instrumental in addressing the issue. An educational film has been developed, civil injunctions pursued, and rehabilitation activities ensured for those convicted. Sgt Adrian Brown, representing the Road Harm Prevention Team, acknowledged the collective effort of the team in tackling the longstanding problem of illegal street racing in the region. The team's dedication to stopping vehicles, gathering evidence, and building case files has been crucial in addressing the issue effectively.
