PROOF Film Festival 2025: Celebrating Short-Form Storytelling and Industry Insights

The American Cinematheque is gearing up for its annual PROOF Film Festival, set to take place at The Culver Theater from Nov. 7–9. The festival highlights the impact of short-form storytelling as a stepping stone for feature-length films. The centerpiece of this year's event is the Los Angeles premiere of Atropia, winner of the 2025 Sundance U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Drama. Originally a short film, Atropia has now been developed into a full-length feature starring Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner, produced by director Luca Guadagnino. Writer-director Hailey Gates and Shawkat will be present for a Q&A session following the screening of both versions of the film.
In addition to the film screenings, the festival will feature a panel discussion titled Film Financing Today, in collaboration with TheWrap. Industry experts from Film Mode Entertainment, Pressman Films, and Unapologetic Projects will delve into the current landscape of funding independent projects. Another highlight is the Next Steps: From a Short to a Feature panel, where filmmakers like Jim Cummings, Caroline Lindy, and Michael Vlamis will share their experiences and advice on expanding short films into feature-length projects.
The festival will showcase eight selected pitches, including stories like Bee, Cult Like Activity, It Revolves Around Tycho, Lucky Lenny, Paper Tiger, Skylight, The Re-Education of Jane Brown, and When I Taste Blood. These diverse narratives offer a glimpse into the creative and innovative storytelling that the festival aims to promote. The 2025 PROOF Film Festival jury comprises industry professionals with expertise in studio development, independent production, casting, and talent discovery.
Attendees can also look forward to the Pitch Deck Show & Tell, where filmmakers will have the opportunity to present their feature and series concepts to industry veterans for feedback. Tickets for screenings, panels, and events are now available on the American Cinematheque website. The PROOF Film Festival, founded by the American Cinematheque, is a unique platform dedicated to showcasing proof-of-concept storytelling and supporting emerging filmmakers in their creative endeavors.
