Alexis Ohanian's Departure from Reddit: A Stand Against Hateful Content and a Call for Change
Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, recently shared his reasons for stepping away from the platform he helped create. Ohanian expressed discomfort with Reddit's handling of hateful content, which ultimately led to his decision to resign from the board. He and co-founder Steve Huffman started Reddit in 2005, building it into a vast network of user-run communities called Subreddits.
Reflecting on his time building Reddit, Ohanian described it as his "baby." However, as the platform grew and attracted millions of users, he became increasingly uneasy with how Reddit managed disturbing content, such as racist material and graphic videos of real-world deaths. Ohanian advocated for banning these spaces but faced resistance from leadership who cited concerns about free speech.
Despite his efforts, Ohanian felt that change from within Reddit was unlikely. In response to the platform's handling of disturbing content, he resigned from the board in June 2020 and called for a Black board member to be appointed in his place. Ohanian cited his family, including his wife Serena Williams and their daughters, as a significant influence on his decision, particularly in light of online hostility towards Black women.
Since leaving Reddit, Ohanian has shifted his focus to venture investments, with a particular emphasis on supporting women's sports. Despite walking away from a company valued in the tens of billions, Ohanian remains resolute in his decision, emphasizing the importance of a clear conscience above all else.
