Pete Townshend made a surprise appearance at the New York City premiere of Quadrophenia: A Rock Ballet, a production based on The Who's 1973 concept album. Townshend joined the stage during the performance of "I'm One" and played the guitar while Paris Fitzpatrick danced as the central character, Jimmy. Townshend later expressed that he brought the show to New York as a tribute to the late choreographer, Paul Roberts, who passed away from cancer. The ballet, directed by Rob Ashford, tells the story of Jimmy and other characters through dance, costumes, and scenery, without any lyrics or vocals.
