Former Substitute Teacher Sentenced to 10 Years for Sexual Misconduct with Middle School Students

A former substitute teacher, Carissa Jane Smith, aged 30, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for engaging in sexual activities with middle school students and providing them with drugs and alcohol. Smith, who worked at various schools in the Dixon R-1 School District, paid students for sex acts, offering them cash or using CashApp for transactions. She also allegedly supplied students with alcohol or marijuana in exchange for sexual favors. The abuse was not limited to one-on-one encounters, as students were recruited by classmates to visit Smith's residence where the abuse took place.

Court documents revealed disturbing details of the abuse, including instances where Smith forced students to engage in sexual acts and threatened them not to disclose the encounters. She went to great lengths to cover up her actions, including destroying evidence and warning victims not to speak out. Smith's husband and brother-in-law were also allegedly involved in threatening or confronting victims who tried to expose her actions. The abuse occurred in various locations, including Smith's home, car, and isolated areas like gravel roads.

In September, Smith pleaded guilty to lesser charges, including sexual contact with a student and endangering the welfare of a child, as part of a plea agreement. Despite the severity of the allegations, Smith's attorney could not be reached for comment. The case highlights the importance of protecting students from predatory behavior and ensuring the safety of children in educational settings. Such incidents underscore the need for strict measures to prevent and address misconduct by individuals in positions of authority.
