Remembering Rodney Rogers: A Tribute to a Wake Forest Legend

Wake Forest Athletics is saddened by the passing of Rodney Rogers, a beloved Demon Deacons legend and member of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame. Rogers, a standout player from Durham, was a key figure in the history of Wake Forest men's basketball, earning accolades and leading the team to success in the early 1990s. He is survived by his wife, Faye, and his children, Roddreka, Rodney II, and Rydeiah.

Nicknamed the "Durham Bull," Rogers made a significant impact on the Wake Forest basketball program, receiving recognition such as ACC Freshman of the Year in 1991 and ACC Player of the Year in 1993. His achievements on the court, including leading the team to the NCAA Tournament, solidified his place as one of the program's all-time greats.

Following his college career, Rogers was drafted ninth overall by the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Draft and went on to have a successful 12-year career in the league. Despite facing challenges, including a life-altering accident in 2008 that left him paralyzed, Rogers remained a beacon of strength and resilience, inspiring others through his foundation and advocacy for spinal cord injury awareness.

In recognition of his contributions to Wake Forest and his unwavering spirit, Rogers was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2022. His legacy lives on through his retired jersey number, which hangs in the rafters of the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, serving as a reminder of his impact on the program and the community.
