Steven Paul's Vision for Qatar's Film Industry: Collaborations, Tariff Talks, and Hollywood Revitalization
Steven Paul, a seasoned Hollywood figure, was in Qatar for an industry event showcasing the country's aspirations to become a prominent film and TV center in the region. During a masterclass discussing his illustrious career, Paul mentioned ongoing discussions with Qatar's Film Committee for potential collaborations, although no definitive agreements have been reached yet. His visit to Qatar followed his involvement in crafting a memo with Jon Voigt proposing ways to revitalize Hollywood, including imposing tariffs on U.S. productions shot abroad.
The memo, which suggested imposing a 120% tariff on U.S. productions filmed outside the country, caught the attention of President Donald Trump, who expressed interest in exploring a 100% tariff on foreign-produced movies entering the U.S. market. Despite the initial buzz surrounding the tariff idea, Trump later revisited the concept, citing concerns about the U.S. film industry being "stolen" by other nations. Paul, reflecting on the memo's development process, expressed skepticism about the feasibility and desirability of imposing tariffs on the entertainment industry.
In an effort to bolster production in Los Angeles, Paul introduced a financing scheme at Avenue Six Studios, owned by SP Media Group, to support film and TV projects filmed on its premises. He expressed interest in establishing coproduction agreements with Qatar's Film Committee, envisioning joint productions that could be filmed at Avenue Six Studios. Paul's remarks were part of the Industry Days event at the Doha Film Festival, organized by Qatar's Film Committee in collaboration with the Doha Film Institute to promote the country as a film and TV hub.
The Film Committee, overseen by Hassan Al Thawadi, aims to position Qatar as a key player in the film industry. Recent announcements during the Industry Days event included partnerships with prominent companies like Neon, Department M, Miramax, Sony, and Company 3, as well as the filming of Barbara Broccoli's upcoming production "Othello" in Qatar, directed by David Oyelowo and starring Rachel Brosnahan and Cynthia Erivo. The event shed light on Qatar's efforts to attract international productions and solidify its presence in the global film landscape.
