A vintage 1977 Volkswagen T2 microbus, affectionately named "Azul" by its owner Megan Weinraub, has been fully restored after surviving the Palisades Fire in California. The iconic blue van, captured in a photo by Mark J. Terrill of The Associated Press amidst the fire-ravaged neighborhood, now boasts a fresh coat of blue and white paint and has undergone extensive repairs with over 900 replacement parts. The restored microbus is currently showcased at the VW exhibit at the Los Angeles Auto Show until Nov. 30.
Despite appearing unscathed in the photo, the microbus was actually in dire need of restoration due to the damage caused by the fire. Volkswagen of America took on the challenge of restoring the vehicle, with Porsche specialists handling the body panels and VW technicians replacing any necessary parts to ensure its roadworthiness. The van's transformation from a fire-damaged wreck to a symbol of hope has garnered widespread attention and admiration.
Megan Weinraub, the owner of the microbus, expressed her emotional connection to the vehicle, stating that the restoration process has made it an even more powerful symbol of resilience and hope. Volkswagen of America commemorated the completion of the restoration by making a donation to the California Fire Foundation, honoring the van's survival and the spirit of those affected by the wildfires.
The restored microbus made its debut at the auto show, where it received a warm reception from enthusiasts and onlookers. Preston Martin, the van's previous owner and a friend of Megan Weinraub, was present at the event to witness the transformation of the beloved vehicle. Both Martin and Weinraub share a passion for surfing and craftsmanship, adding a personal touch to the story of Azul's remarkable journey from fire survivor to restored classic.
