Escaping the Quiverfull Movement: A Journey of Recovery and Advocacy

Growing up in a large family with strict religious beliefs, I was raised in the Quiverfull Movement, which emphasized having many children to spread Christian conservative values. My parents controlled every aspect of my life, from my education to my occupation, and enforced their beliefs with strict rules and expectations. I was homeschooled, taught creationism, and wore a purity ring to signify my commitment to remaining a virgin until marriage.
Despite the chaotic and demanding environment at home, I was expected to obey without question and provide unconditional love to my parents. As I grew older and started college, I began to question the beliefs and practices I had been raised with. This led to conflicts with my parents, who eventually kicked me and my sister out of their house, leaving us with nowhere to go.
Being forced to leave home was a turning point for me, as it allowed me to start questioning the beliefs and practices that had been imposed on me. I realized that I needed to help my siblings escape from the same environment, but faced challenges in advocating for them due to legal limitations. Despite my efforts to reach out to my siblings and expose the abuse I experienced, my parents cut off my access to them unless I submitted to their control.
Ultimately, I had to make the difficult decision to let go of my siblings in order to protect myself and continue speaking out against the abuse. I reported my parents to authorities for child abuse and sought support from a therapist to cope with the trauma I had experienced. Moving to Seattle and later finding a community in Olympia, Washington, helped me rebuild my life and connect with others who had similar experiences.
Living with chronic pain and C-PTSD, I now focus on writing about my journey of recovery, trauma, and social justice issues. With the support of friends and online patrons, I continue to share my story and advocate for those who have faced similar challenges in breaking free from oppressive environments.
