Los Angeles Maintains Strong Presence in Global Film and TV Production Market in 2024

Los Angeles continues to be a prominent global center for film and TV production, with a steady share of productions in 2024. According to a recent report by FilmLA, 18.3% of the 857 films and scripted TV series released last year were shot in Los Angeles, maintaining a similar share to the previous year. Georgia emerged as a close competitor with 9.8% of productions shot in the state.
The U.K. is also making strides in the market, with its share growing from 6.6% to 8.8% due to an increase in streaming and cable TV series filmed there. FilmLA, responsible for location permits in the L.A. region, gathered data from IMDbPro to determine L.A.'s market share. The agency's Scripted Content Study aims to track English-language film and scripted TV productions by U.S.-based companies, without considering production budgets or shoot durations.
The total number of productions declined from 1,040 in 2022 to 857 in 2024, partly due to disruptions caused by strikes in 2023. However, the industry has also scaled back production as streaming companies adjust their strategies. California Governor Gavin Newsom's initiative to increase the state's production tax incentive from $330 million to $750 million is expected to have a positive impact in the coming years.
FilmLA spokesperson Philip Sokoloski emphasized the importance of expanding options to attract and retain film jobs for California's economy and working families. The report highlights declines in British Columbia and New York, while Ontario and New Jersey saw slight increases. Los Angeles experienced a decrease in cable TV series but an increase in theatrical films, while streaming series declined but streaming movies saw a rebound.
