Diplomatic Dispute: Indian Citizen's Detention in Shanghai Sparks Tensions Between India and China

The recent detention of Pema Wangjom Thongdok, an Indian citizen residing in the UK, at Shanghai airport has sparked a diplomatic dispute between India and China. Ms. Thongdok was held by immigration officials during her journey from London to Japan via Shanghai due to her passport indicating her birthplace as Arunachal Pradesh, a region claimed by both countries. India protested the detention, emphasizing Arunachal's status as an integral part of India and demanding an explanation from China. After 18 hours in detention, Ms. Thongdok was released with the assistance of Indian embassy officials.
India's foreign ministry condemned the arbitrary detention of Ms. Thongdok, highlighting China's violation of international air travel conventions and its own regulations on visa-free transit. China's foreign ministry defended the detention, asserting that it was carried out lawfully and in accordance with regulations. Despite providing Ms. Thongdok with facilities and meals, China reiterated its claim over Arunachal Pradesh, rejecting India's sovereignty over the region.
Arunachal Pradesh, situated along the Line of Actual Control in the Himalayas, has been a longstanding point of contention between India and China. The region's disputed status has led to border clashes, including a recent incident in Tawang in 2022. Despite efforts to improve relations, such as resuming air services and de-escalating border tensions, Ms. Thongdok's detention has drawn attention in India, especially amidst diplomatic efforts to foster partnership between the two nations.
Ms. Thongdok, a UK resident for 14 years, expressed shock at her treatment in Shanghai, where officials questioned the validity of her passport and mocked her Indian nationality. Despite previous travels through Shanghai without incident, she faced discrimination based on her Arunachal Pradesh birthplace. The incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding territorial disputes between India and China, despite recent diplomatic gestures towards cooperation and mutual respect.
