Remembering Chas Newby: A Tribute to The Beatles' Bassist and Droitwich Educator

After the band's initial trip to Hamburg, bassist Stuart Sutcliffe remained in Germany for Christmas while the rest of The Beatles returned to Liverpool. To commemorate the 65th anniversary of this event, Chas Newby's son, Steve, shared insights into his father's time with the iconic band and his passion for teaching at Droitwich Spa High School. Steve expressed his desire for his father to be remembered in Droitwich and for his remarkable story to receive wider recognition. Following his brief stint on stage with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, Chas resumed his studies and work, eventually settling down with his wife Margaret in Alcester.
Chas pursued a career in Chemical Engineering, earning a master's degree in 1970 and working in the aerospace industry until 1990. However, a career change led him to become a math teacher at Droitwich Spa High School, where he shared his expertise with students. In 2016, Chas joined The Quarrymen, the band that preceded The Beatles and was originally formed by John Lennon. The Standard reached out to Droitwich Town Councillor Bob Brookes to explore the possibility of honoring Chas in Droitwich. Councillor Brookes found Chas's story intriguing and expressed willingness to assist Steve in paying tribute to his father in the town.
