Florida State University Football Program Faces Recruiting Challenges Amid Recent Decommitments

The recent decommitments at Florida State University are causing concern among fans and followers of the football program. Despite the announcement that head coach Mike Norvell will stay with the team until 2026, the uncertainty surrounding the Seminoles' future is affecting recruiting efforts. In the past few weeks, five prospects have withdrawn their commitments, with some choosing to join other schools.

One of the latest decommitments is three-star defensive back Sean Johnson, who has decided to switch his commitment from Florida State to Maryland. Johnson had been committed to the Seminoles since April, but he never took an official visit to Maryland. The Terrapins, led by head coach Mike Locksley, have a 4-7 record this season. Johnson, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound player, is ranked as the No. 600 overall prospect, the No. 46 cornerback, and the No. 14 recruit in Maryland for the 2026 class.

Johnson's departure adds to the recent trend of defensive back decommitments from Florida State, including four-star cornerback Jay Timmons and four-star safety Tedarius Hughes. On a positive note, the Seminoles were able to secure a commitment from three-star safety Jordan Crutchfield, who was previously committed to Kentucky. With Johnson's decision, Florida State now has 27 verbal commitments in its 2026 class, which ranks 15th in the nation.

In addition to Johnson, the Seminoles have landed several other recruits, including four-star cornerback Chauncey Kennon, three-star safety Darryll Bell III, and three-star safety Jordan Crutchfield. The team's recruiting class also features highly rated players in various positions, such as quarterback, running back, tight end, wide receiver, offensive line, and defensive line. Despite the recent decommitments, Florida State is working to build a competitive roster for the future.
