Malachi's Journey: Overcoming Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Meghan Jenkins was a busy mom with her energetic toddler, Malachi, who loved dinosaurs, monster trucks, and the Miami Dolphins. When Malachi started showing signs of illness, including fatigue, a cough, and black stool, Jenkins rushed him to the emergency room. After a bone marrow biopsy, Malachi was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a rare cancer that affects the bone marrow and white blood cells. The diagnosis was devastating, and Jenkins struggled with the news of her son's life expectancy being just a few years.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a fast-growing cancer that can spread throughout the body, affecting organs like the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. Malachi's treatment began immediately with chemotherapy, which required him to stay in the hospital for the first month. Despite the intense treatment and side effects like nausea and fatigue, Malachi showed resilience and progress. He continued chemotherapy at home and entered the maintenance phase, which lasted for two years.
After a long and challenging journey, Malachi completed his cancer treatment in August 2023. He rang the bell signifying the end of his therapy and is now a thriving 7-year-old who excels in school, enjoys reading, and remains in remission. Malachi's success in overcoming his initial prognosis and completing his treatment means that his life expectancy is now similar to any other child his age. Jenkins and Malachi celebrated this milestone with gratitude and hope for the future.
