SpeQtre CubeSat: Pioneering Quantum Communications in Space

SpeQtral, a leading quantum communications company based in Singapore, has successfully launched the SpeQtre CubeSat in collaboration with the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council's RAL Space. The CubeSat, deployed into sun-synchronous orbit on November 28, 2025, carries SpeQtral's entangled photon pair source and detector modules, marking a significant achievement in Singapore-UK space collaboration and quantum communications technology.

The SpeQtre satellite, a 12U CubeSat, is equipped with advanced quantum hardware developed by SpeQtral to explore secure space-based quantum communications. This mission aims to demonstrate the exchange of quantum information from a small CubeSat, paving the way for cost-effective and accessible quantum communication missions in the future. The satellite will investigate various aspects of quantum communications, starting with validating quantum components and progressing to advanced quantum communication protocols.

The collaboration between SpeQtral and RAL Space has resulted in the successful deployment of the SpeQtre satellite, which will undergo commissioning in the coming months. The satellite platform will be tested thoroughly to ensure the readiness of all spacecraft subsystems. The quantum payload and optical system will also be commissioned in phases, leading to quantum experiments and key delivery mechanisms.

Space-based quantum communications play a crucial role in addressing cybersecurity challenges posed by advances in quantum computing. Unlike terrestrial networks, satellite-based systems offer quantum-secure communications over vast distances without the need for intermediary trusted repeater nodes. The SpeQtre mission supports international efforts to establish quantum-secure communication networks and highlights the importance of quantum communications in future cybersecurity.

The SpeQtre collaboration is part of a Singapore-UK bilateral initiative aimed at strengthening technological cooperation between the two nations. Leveraging Singapore's quantum expertise at SpeQtral and the UK's space engineering capabilities at RAL Space, the mission showcases Singapore's leadership in space-based quantum communications. The collaboration underscores the value of strategic international partnerships in driving innovation and advancing critical technologies.

Following the commissioning phase, quantum communications experiments are set to begin in early 2026. These experiments will involve quantum-enabled optical ground stations in Singapore and the UK, demonstrating secured communications between the two sites. The success of the mission will validate cost-effective small-satellite approaches to quantum communications, potentially accelerating the deployment of commercial quantum communications constellations and establishing important precedents for international cooperation in quantum technologies and space-based security systems.

SpeQtral is at the forefront of quantum communications, aiming to build global quantum networks and protect telecommunication networks against cyber threats. By developing quantum-secure products and services, SpeQtral is driving innovation in quantum communications to secure networks against future quantum-based attacks and pave the way for the future quantum internet.
