Toei Expands Horizons at JAFF Market: Unveiling New International Division and Horror Film Genius Loci

Toei, a Japanese studio, is making its debut at JAFF Market with its new international division to explore opportunities in the Indonesian market and collaborate with local partners for its genre projects, such as the upcoming horror film Genius Loci. The international production team, established in April last year, is focused on co-financing, co-developing, and co-producing original films and TV series for the global audience. Their main goal is to create local language content that resonates with viewers in their respective regions. Toei may handle Japanese distribution and international sales to maximize the projects' reach.
One of the projects in the pipeline is Genius Loci, a horror film that will be filmed in Indonesia. The details of the film are currently kept under wraps as it is still in the development stage. Toei's participation at JAFF Market marks the first time a Japanese exhibitor is present at the event, which is in its second edition and takes place from November 29 to December 2 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in conjunction with Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF). As part of the celebration, Toei's iconic film Battle Royale will be screened in 4K to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
Shiori Takata, the director of production and head of film licensing at Toei's international division, will be part of a panel discussion on Sunday (November 30) titled Expanding The Horizon of Asian Cinema Today. The panel will also feature industry professionals such as Nelson Mok from Mokster Films, Eric Lin from Damai Entertainment, and Phong Duong from Mockingbird Pictures. This collaboration and participation at JAFF Market showcase Toei's commitment to expanding its presence in the international market and exploring new opportunities for collaboration and growth.
