Bridging Borders: Mandela Pictures and Desert Bloom Pictures Forge Cross-Cultural Collaboration

Indonesia's Mandela Pictures and Korea-L.A.-based Desert Bloom Pictures have joined forces to develop a four-film slate, announced at the JAFF Market in Yogyakarta. The collaboration aims to create projects that bridge the Indonesian, Korean, and Hollywood markets by leveraging Desert Bloom's expertise in Korean blockbusters and Mandela's presence in Southeast Asia's theatrical market.

Desert Bloom, led by executives Jennice Lee, Hugh Cha, and Park Hyoungjin, brings a wealth of experience from successful Korean films like "Exhuma" and "Along With the Gods." Mandela Pictures, run by the Samtani brothers, is expanding its portfolio of genre and commercial titles, capitalizing on its film library and strong presence in Indonesia's theatrical and streaming landscape.

The initial slate includes four projects, such as "Ugly Duckling," a dramedy exploring image and identity in the social media era for Indonesian audiences. Additionally, two Indonesia-based films will adapt U.S. or Korean intellectual properties with local cultural elements. A Korean horror feature from Mandela's genre label BN13 is also in the works for Korean and international audiences.

The partnership aims to cultivate Indonesian-rooted stories that resonate in Jakarta, Seoul, and Los Angeles. By combining Mandela's local insights with Desert Bloom's Korean and Hollywood networks, the collaboration seeks to establish a sustainable cross-border studio ecosystem.

The collaboration will involve a talent exchange program, facilitating collaboration between Korean and Indonesian creatives in writers' rooms and on set. This initiative will provide opportunities for Indonesian talent to participate in Korean and hybrid productions, fostering a dynamic creative environment.

Details on creative attachments, casting, and production timelines for the projects will be disclosed as they progress through development. The partnership between Mandela Pictures and Desert Bloom Pictures signifies a strategic alliance to create compelling cross-cultural content for diverse audiences worldwide.
