Evolution of Porcupine Tree: From Side Project to Progressive Rock Pioneers
Porcupine Tree was initially created as a side project by Steven Wilson in 1987 while he was focused on his main band, No-Man. However, the unexpected success of their debut album, On The Sunday Of Life…, forced Wilson to take Porcupine Tree more seriously. The band's eclectic style and relative success posed challenges, but Wilson found potential in the project. The debut album, a blend of spacey synthesizers, trippy lyrics, and whispered monologues, sold well beyond its initial pressing, surprising Wilson and prompting a reevaluation of the band's direction.
The band's early albums, including Up The Downstair and The Sky Moves Sideways, showcased a mix of ambient house music and progressive rock influences. Collaborations with musicians like Richard Barbieri and Colin Edwin further shaped their sound. Stupid Dream in 1999 and Lightbulb Sun in 2000 saw the band exploring more accessible and pop-oriented sounds, leading to some criticism of selling out. Recordings in 2001 compiled outtakes and extras, showcasing the band's diverse material. A deal with Atlantic Records subsidiary Lava in 2001 brought new opportunities but also internal challenges, including the departure of drummer Chris Maitland. The band's sound evolved with In Absentia in 2002, incorporating heavier elements inspired by Wilson's work with Opeth.
Despite commercial success and critical acclaim, Porcupine Tree remained true to their artistic vision, resisting pressures to conform to mainstream expectations.
