Judi Dench Opens Up About Macular Degeneration Challenges and Adaptations

Judi Dench, a renowned 90-year-old actress, has been open about her struggle with macular degeneration, a degenerative eye condition that has affected her vision. In a recent interview with ITV News, Dench revealed that she can no longer recognize people and has difficulty seeing the television or reading. Despite her vision challenges, she humorously mentioned that she can still recognize her former costar Ian McKellen by his outline and distinctive Macbeth scarf.
Dench shared that her worsening vision has made it impossible for her to go out alone, as she fears walking into things or falling over. She expressed her reliance on having someone accompany her at all times for safety. The actress also discussed how her vision impairment has affected her acting work, particularly in memorizing lines. Dench mentioned using a machine to help her learn lines and locate them on the page, as her photographic memory is no longer sufficient.
In a conversation supporting the Vision Foundation, a sight loss charity in London, Dench explained her adaptation to memorizing scripts since she can no longer read. She emphasized the importance of having friends repeat lines to her repeatedly to aid in learning. Despite the challenges she faces with her vision, Dench maintains a positive attitude and continues to find ways to overcome obstacles in her daily life and work.
