International Cooperation in Combating Drug Trafficking: The Case of Pedro Inzunza Coronel
A man accused of trafficking large quantities of fentanyl and cocaine in the U.S. was killed by Mexican military forces during an anti-drug operation in Sinaloa. Pedro Inzunza Coronel, also known as "Pichon," was confirmed dead by Mexico's security secretary, Omar Garcia Harfuch. The operation, led by the Secretariat of the Navy, resulted in the death of Coronel after he and his associates attacked naval personnel.
In May, the U.S. Department of Justice charged Coronel and his father, Pedro Inzunza Noriega, with narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and money laundering. The duo were leaders of a faction of the Beltran Leyva Organization, a violent group associated with the Sinaloa cartel. They were accused of trafficking large amounts of fentanyl into the U.S., with the Mexican government seizing over 1.65 tons of fentanyl linked to them, marking the largest fentanyl seizure globally.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson highlighted Inzunza's alleged involvement in various crimes, including murders, kidnappings, and violent debt collection related to drug trafficking. The collaboration between the U.S. and Mexico in combating such threats was emphasized by Johnson as a significant achievement.
President Donald Trump has urged Mexico to intensify its efforts against drug trafficking since taking office in January. In response to reports of potential U.S. military action against Latin American drug cartels, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reassured that there would be no invasion of Mexico. Additionally, Mexico extradited 26 high-ranking cartel members to the U.S. in a significant agreement with the Trump administration, including leaders of "Los Cuinis" and individuals wanted for serious crimes like the killing of a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy.
