Exploring the Golden Surfer: The Fantastic Four's Alternate Silver Surfer Concept Art

Marvel's Fantastic Four movie almost featured a different look for the Silver Surfer, with concept art exploring a golden version. The newly revealed designs from The Fantastic Four: First Steps considered a radical redesign for Shalla-Bal, the Silver Surfer. The early visual proposals drew inspiration from Nova, a Marvel Comics character, and experimented with changing the character's signature silver appearance to gold.
Concept illustrator Jana Schirmer delved into the idea of visually altering the Silver Surfer's powers in The Fantastic Four: First Steps – The Art of the Movie. Schirmer explored the concept of the Surfer undergoing a color change, possibly turning gold due to some form of oxidation or heat-induced color transformation, similar to motorcycle exhaust pipes. The exploration also included variations in hairstyles and energy trails inspired by Frankie Raye, a character from Marvel comics who develops abilities similar to the Human Torch.
In Marvel comics, Frankie Raye initially partners with Johnny Storm and later gains powers akin to the Human Torch before choosing to serve Galactus and encountering the Silver Surfer. Despite initial mixed reactions from fans about introducing a female Silver Surfer in the film, the final portrayal of Shalla-Bal received positive feedback. Marvel Studios has not disclosed any plans for the future appearances of Shalla-Bal or Galactus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
